As in business, designation as trade and both state and federal e-zones provides significant benefits. The state designation is a powerful magnet for retention, expansion and new investment. Concomitantly, without an e-zone or trade zone, a community is at a distinct disadvantage to competitive locales that can offer the myriad of tax and other e-zone benefits. Similarly, designation as a federal e-zone brings distinct advantages. One of the greatest is the eligibility for numerous funding initiatives under the Workforce Investment Act. Communities without such a zone are ineligible for critical funding under this Act. Thus, if a community is to compete successfully, it is vital for it to have both state and federally designated e-zones and trade zones.
